A check for a suspicious person brought police to the alley between the 1500 blocks of Ridgeland and Elmwood at 9:45 AM. They found a homeless man in early 20s behind a garage. A name check showed the man was wanted by the Illinois State Police. He was arrested and processed for that warrant.

Residents report suspicious doorknob checker

Police were sent looking for a suspicious man checking front doorknobs on the 2300 block of Highland; suspect was described as Hispanic, 20-30, wearing dark jeans, a baseball cap and a black-and-green-checked jacket. A man dressed this way was located talking on a porch to a resident. The resident, a 47-year-old man, said the stranger rang his bell and asked "is this the Martinez family?" A safety patdown of the suspect recovered several gold chains and bracelets stuffed in his pockets. He carried no ID and spoke no English; he was arrested pending identification.

Wanted Clarendon Hills man arrested

A call came in about two suspicious men lying on a sidewalk in the 3200 block of Kenilworth. When police arrived, there was only one man, and he was standing up. He said he was Russell Mason, age 42, of Clarendon Hills. A LEADS check found a warrant on him for resisting arrest in Franklin Park; he was arrested and the Franklin Park cops said they'd pick him up.

Suspicious alley-walker arrested

An officer saw a male wearing jeans and a gray hoody walking slowly and looking around in the alley of the 1400 block of Kenilworth. He was stopped and frisked. The man produced an ID showing he was Eric Spears, 37, of Chicago. He was found to have two active warrants for arrest: one from Cook County, for violating an order of protection, and one from the North Riverside Police Dept. for driving on a suspended license, so he was arrested.

A man employed at White Castle, Harlem and Ogden, reported a silver 1996 Acura pulled up to the drive-thru, and the driver, a bearded Hispanic male, threw a bag of pumpkin seeds at the window. The suspect then opened the window of the drive-thru with his hands and spit inside at the employee, called him a "fag" and drove away without ever paying or picking up his order. The vehicle is registered to a car of a different make and model owned by a woman in Elmwood park; the employee said he could identify the suspect if he is caught.

After midnight Friday, an officer noticed a silver Corolla head south on Ridgeland with both front seat occupants unseatbelted. When pulled over at 26th and Ridgeland, a strong odor of burnt cannabis was detected by the officer. Marijuana seeds and stems were visible on the floor between the front seats, as well as a partially burned leafy substance in plain view on the console. The driver, a 35-year-old man from the 2500 block of Cuyler, refused to exit the car and became verbally combative, saying "F--- you! I'm in front of my own house!" Finally, he came out and was patted down for officer safety. The woman passenger in the front seat was asked to unzip her jacket for the same reason; at this, everyone in the car began aggressively yelling that the officer could not search a woman. The officer explained the situation again. The driver said "F--- that!' and made a move toward the officer. The driver was then ordered to put his hands on the car; several requests were made before he complied. The officer unzipped the woman's jacket and found no weapons. The driver was arrested for possession; his stash of weed was found in a plastic bag tucked in the visor of the car.

Just before midnight, an officer in the alley between the 3500 block of Harvey and Lombard saw an older gray Buick stopped, and by it, a man standing in front of a garage door. The man entered the Buick and drove away. The officer stopped him because he was a known gang member from a gang wanted by Berwyn police for numerous recent graffiti incidents. He was arrested. A search of the vehicle turned up three pairs of latex gloves.

Burger King inner sanctum invaded by incoherent man

Employees of Burger King, 2147 S. Oak Park Avenue, reported a very drunk, incoherent man kept trying to enter the kitchen and did enter the office, where he stared at the safe. Witnesses showed police the man in a car in the parking lot; the 37-year-old Chicago man was ticketed for the disturbance.

Fake gas company rep seems suspicious in retrospect

While canvassing the neighborhood to investigate the burglary on Highland, officers spoke to a 73-year-old woman, also in the 3400 block, who related the following. Two days earlier, at 1 PM, a young man came to her door. He said he was from the gas company and asked her to let him inside to check the meter. But when she requested ID, he could not produce it. So she refused to let him in and he walked away. She described him as about 25, black, short black hair, 5'8" and 200 pounds. Asked why she did not report it when it happened, the woman said she did not think he looked suspicious.

An 18-year-old Berwyn woman walking near 27th and East reported a man was following her making sexual remarks. The suspect was in a black Olds Alero. He is described as being Hispanic, 20 to 30 years old, having a shaved head with a "rat-tail" in back.
