Dispatchers took a call about a grey car parked in the 1800 block of Kenilworth; the two men inside appeared to be passing something back and forth to each other. The officer found a grey 1997 Pontiac Bonneville double parked and obstructing traffic; a check showed the plates were suspended for insurance violation. Both men inside were from Broadview. The driver, 26-year-old David Crockett, could only show a state ID; his licensed was suspended. He was ticketed for that, for the suspended registration and for obstructing traffic; the car was towed.

Mommy can't help you now

The 911 board lit up with calls about a man standing in the middle of the Ogden/Oak Park Avenue intersection, causing cars to swerve to avoid him as he yelled gang slogans and made gang hand signals at passing cars and people. The man turned out to be a 17-year-old Lyons boy wearing jeans, a black baseball cap and no shirt. When police arrived they recognized him as a known gang member, and told him to put his hands on the hood of the squad car. At this, the boy threw down a plastic 375 ml bottle of Smirnoff vodka, now three-quarters empty. Both his breath and the rest of him smelled of alcohol; he wobbled when asked to stand still. Police called the boy’s dad, who responded, "And he was doing so good, too, staying out of trouble."
Once in the Berwyn lockup, the teen was verbally abusive to other prisoners. Asked for his address, he told police, "I’m not telling you shit." In his cell, the teen banged his hands against the door, yelling "I know my rights! I wanna call my dad! F---- the Berwyn police," and more in that vein. After carrying on this way for some time, the teen yelled "I need medical! I broke my hand!" The booking officer looked in his cell and saw blood on his hand, so the boy was taken to MacNeal Hospital. Seven other prisoners stated they had heard him screaming, using racial epithets, cursing, pounding on his door and yelling "I want my mom!"

No sliders for man passed out in drive-thru lane

A call from White Castle at Ogden and Harlem alerted police to a man asleep in the drive-thru lane. The manager said the guy ordered food at the intercom, then nodded off in the 25 feet between intercom and pickup window. The driver of the 2002 Acura was definitely not awake, so the officer got into the car via the passenger door. It was in drive, running, with the sleeping man's foot on the brake. The officer removed the key and woke up 25-year-old Derick Romstedt of Channahon; Romstedt was asked to get out of the car. With bloodshot eyes, poor balance and vomit-smeared garb, Romstedt needed help to stand. He protested "I'm just going home, man, I want some food." Because of the man's condition and boozy breath he was asked to perform sobriety tests, which he had a lot of trouble doing. Citations included obstructing traffic, no insurance, no seatbelt and driving while too wasted to keep his eyes open.

Peeing in parking lot a no-no

Someone reported that the driver of a car in the parking lot behind Morton West High School had exited the car and urinated in the lot. Responding officers located the blue 2000 Chevy Malibu and found it was obstructing traffic. The offender was a 21-year-old man from the 3500 block of S. Elmwood in Berwyn, who also had a suspended driver's license.

An officer observed a green 1998 Ford Windstar parked and unoccupied in the middle of the 1400 block of Oak Park Avenue, then saw a man try to enter the vehicle with a child. The officer asked for license and proof of insurance; he could produce neither. A check showed the man , a 26-year old from Berwyn, had a suspended driver's license. He was arrested and cited for driving without license or insurance and for obstructing traffic. Police contacted the mother to come fetch the child.
