Loitering gangbangers caught holding weed at 12th and Maple

An officer saw three known gang members standing in the 1200 block of Maple after they had been told not to loiter. When they saw his squad car, the men quickly entered a 1996 Grand Am with temporary plates. The officer walked up and asked what they were doing. "We’re leaving," was the reply. A strong odor of cannabis wafted from the Grand Am. The officer told everyone to get out of the car and submit to a weapons check. A rear passenger – a 20-year-old man from the 2700 block of East – told the officer they had weed in the back seat in a sweatshirt pocket. The officer also found a "one-hitter" pipe and a small wooden "dug out" pot container containing what you would expect. The driver, another 20-year-old man, lives in the 1500 block of Wisconsin. The third man is homeless. All three were ticketed for possession of marijuana and the Grand Am was towed.

Chicago men near 16th and Elmwood caught with pot

An officer saw a white 2005 Volvo S40 on 16th near Gunderson and saw the passenger drop cigar ash into the street. When stopped at 16th and Elmwood, the driver, Peter Portugues, 19, of Chicago, said he had no idea what the passenger sitting right next to him was doing. The passenger, 25-year-old Jonathan Rivera, also of Chicago, was asked what he was doing. Rivera said he was about to roll a blunt with some of pot he had; he helpfully reached into his right gym shoe and produced a bag of marijuana, for which he was ticketed.

Officers near 14th and Wesley saw a bicyclist appear to speed up to get further away from police. Because of the high rate of crime and graffiti in that area, this piqued officers' interest, so they caught up and asked what the 22-year-old Cicero man had on him. "I have some weed," came the helpful response. Police retrieved three yellow plastic baggies with a design of batwings. A name check showed the man also had two active warrants: one from DuPage County and the other from the Cicero Police. The man was arrested and handed over to Cicero; the baggies held 3.6 grams of pot, for which he was ticketed.

Underage drinkers in alley also caught with marijuana

A patrol officer saw two males drinking beer in the 2700 block of Oak Park, east alley. When asked what they were drinking, each held up a can of Ice House. When asked their ages, one said 18 and the other 20. A search of the 18-year-old turned up a bag containing four smaller baggies of marijuana. Both were cited for possession of alcohol by a minor; the pot-toter had 2.8 grams and got a ticket for having over 2.5 grams.

An anonymous caller told dispatchers four males were standing near a Mercury Marquis in the 3800 block of Grove, using gang slogans and hand signals. Police questioned the four men, all of whom were in their late teens or early twenties. Two were Berwyn residents, one was from Hoffman Estates and the fourth from Schaumburg. They claimed they were doing nothing wrong and furthermore they were former, not current, gangbangers. It was then that the officer noticed a bag of marijuana on the pavement. The Hoffman Estates teen said it was his; he had thrown it down in hope of evading arrest. He was charged with pot possession and all four with disorderly conduct.

A 39-year-old man was approached by officers in the alley behind the 1200 block of Wenonah. He stated that he had a nickel bag of weed in his pants pocket. When searched, officers found the marijuana just where he'd said it would be. He was arrested and ticketed.

An officer saw a white 1992 Caprice with temporary plates blow a stop sign at 21st and Grove, and followed it to the 1400 block of Oak Park Avenue before signaling to the driver to stop. He stopped but kept inching the Caprice forward, while making furtive motions toward his waist. He was then ordered out of the car for officer safety. The man, William Dixon, 31, a Chicago resident, had a suspended driver's license. While he was being patted down, Dixon stated "I got some weed." During booking, Dixon's pants were found to contain a baggie containing what tested to be marijuana. The pants also yielded two smaller ziplocks, one of which held seed-and-leaf residue along with $796.19 in cash. The car was sniffed by Canine Officer Epo, who alerted for drugs. However, there was no contraband in the car(anymore). Citations included disobeying a stop, not wearing a seatbelt, driving on a suspended license, no insurance, possession of marijuana, and possessing marijuana with intent to deliver.

A man fitting the description of suspects from the incident of shots being heard was seen by police emerging from the 2400 block of Kenilworth/Grove alley in a blue '94 Cadillac DeVille. When approached, the man -- an Hispanic wearing a black hoody -- said he lived there. However, neither registration nor license came back to the address he gave. In fact, a computer search on his ID came back with a number of cautions for officers, including gang affiliation, multiple prior weapons convictions and a warning that the man, age 32, should be considered "armed and dangerous". He was accordingly frisked for weapons. He also had a baggie of 3.2 grams of marijuana in his car; he was ticketed for it and the weed confiscated.

Teens drive around Berwyn with pot, spray paint

An officer pulled over a speeding 1994 Ford Escort near 27th and Lombard. While speaking to the driver, the officer noticed two cans of spray paint in plain view in the vehicle. In addition, he saw two clear baggies containing what later proved to be 1.6 grams of marijuana. Finally, the car contained a notebook filled with graffiti-type designs. Both 19-year-old males were arrested for possession; one was a Berwynite, the other from Lyons.
