'Tis the season for noise violation tickets

March 12, 2007 2:40 PM
Officers patrolling near Morton West at dismissal time heard a loud, thumping bass. It grew ever louder as a 1997 white Grand Am approached. It could be heard a heck of a lot farther away than 75 feet, which is all that is needed to violate the noise ordinance. Officers stopped the driver, a 17-year-old boy from the 1600 block of East, and made him get out so they could impound the car. A search of the vehicle showed a massive amp and subwoofer in the trunk, wired to the stereo system. The boy's mom came to the station to pay to get the car back and to question the impoundment. She claimed, inaccurately, that the subwoofer was not connected to the stereo. The officer politely explained the ordinance and advised mom to go to court with sonny next month.
