Gangbanger goes bonkers in jail

March 13, 2007, 7 PM
A man riding a bike past a park wearing heavy winter gloves when it's 75 degrees outside draws attention; when he's a known burglar, he gets stopped and spoken to. An officer who saw this at Maple and 15th called for backup; computer check showed a gang caution and that the 20-year-old Cicero man was wanted on a Cook County warrant for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The man was cuffed and kept shoving officers as he was placed in the squad car. Back at the Berwyn lockup, the prisoner began a verbal gang-related altercation with the other four subjects in custody, who responded in kind. The prisoner threatened to kill the children of other prisoners. The booking officer asked for help in moving him to an electronically monitored cell. During the process the prisoner threatened both officers that he would "kick your m-----f-----g asses" if they entered his cell. He was advised not to resist; he did anyway but was successfully moved. The prisoner continued his profane rant, then threatened suicide. Such threats are standard for this prisoner when Berwyn has had him in custody in the past. He began saying he wanted officers to shoot and kill him. When this impressed nobody, he began ramming his head against the walls, bed, etc., until he made himself bleed. The prisoner was finally transported to the MacNeal Hospital emergency room under guard.
