Driver narrowly avoids head-on collision with patrol car

March 8, 2006, 7:20 PM
An officer driving near 28th and East had to swerve to avoid being struck by a white Chevy pickup veering into oncoming traffic. The driver parked the truck, jumped out and hid under a barbecue grill on the side of a house. When officers approached and frisked him, the man, 28-year-old Gerardo Montoya of Evanston, said he ran away because he knew he had no taillights, and apologized for having no proof of insurance. He stated he did not remember driving in the wrong lane and nearly causing an accident a few minutes before.
