Man with plenty of booze in his system tries to leave scene of accident

March 16, 2007, 11:43 PM
Police got a call about a beige Dodge Intrepid trying to leave the scene of an accident at 14th and East. Officers stopped the car, which showed side damage. The driver, a man living in the 1400 block of Grove, smelled powerfully of alcohol. When asked to exit the Intrepid, he staggered and had to prop himself against the car. He refused sobriety tests and aggressively questioned the stop, but was arrested and informed that he was the offender in a hit-and-run. The man denied everything. The vehicle was searched; it contained a 12-pack of Budweiser, all cans now empty and thrown in the backseat. The driver finally cooperated with a breathalyzer test which showed his blood-alcohol level to be .212; legal impairment kicks in at only .08. He was cited for DUI, no insurance, improper lane usage, leaving the scene and illegal transportation of alcohol.
