A dog was stolen from in front of his house at Oak Park and Pershing. The dog, a small white male Bichon/poodle mix named Niko, apparently escaped his back yard and was walking in front of his house. Witnesses said a woman in a green minivan called to him, and was able to scoop him up and take him away. The owner is offering a reward, with no questions asked, for the return of Niko. If you have seen Niko or know where he is, please call Berwyn police at 795-5600, or the owner at 708-359-4744.

Above is a composite sketch based on witness descriptions of the Shoe Warehouse robber; they said he was a male black, 6’6” and 230 lbs, who displayed a dark-color semi-automatic handgun and demanded cash from the wallets of three victims, then fled out the front door. Two men were obliged to hand over their cash, but a third showed the robber his wallet was empty. The witnesses said the offender “giggled” when demanding money, and had a “very calm” demeanor throughout the incident. He was described as 25 to 30 years old, wearing a green jacket and dark knit hat with a small brim.
During the search for the offender, police were told of two suspicious males hanging around a third-floor porch in the rear of a building in the 2100 block of Oak Park. Police found the two and showed them to the robbery victims, but neither one was the robber. The boys, ages 16 and 17, were cited for violating Berwyn’s daytime curfew, and returned to the custody of their mothers.

The victim of strong arm robber told police he was cleaning a friend's garage when a suspicious vehicle drove past. He said an gold, older Chevy Blazer drove through the west side alley of the 1400 block of Scoville a couple of times before stopping behind the friend's garage. A man got out, pointed a large black handgun at the victim, said "give me your chain," then ripped a cross on a gold chain from the victim's neck. The victim told police he could identify the offender, and helped make a composite image of the man. The victim described the robber as "Puerto Rican", around 40, 6', light skin, with a grey goatee, a black skullcap, blue jacket and white gym shoes.

A salesman at Jack Phelan Dodge, 7050 Ogden, reported he showed a customer a red 2004 Ford Expedition, last seen with the customer at the wheel headed east on Ogden. He described the offender as a white male in his 20s, wearing jeans and a white T-shirt, and told police he could identify him. A man from the 3300 block of Lombard saw his own Chevy Blazer with a man in its front seat ripping the stereo from the dashboard. The offender fled on foot to the alley, where he took off in a cream-colored Mercury Cougar occupied by a second man. The Blazer’s window was broken and its Sanyo AM/FM/CD player stolen. The offender is described as Hispanic, 20-25 , 5'6", 170-180 lb, black medium length hair, mustache, wearing dark pants and a yellow sweater with black letters on it.

North Riverside police called Berwyn for assistance as they sought the reckless driver of a black 2006 Dodge Charger. The vehicle was found parked, unattended, in the 1900 block of Home. The offender, 29-year-old Aaron Smith of Broadview, fled westbound through people’s yards. He was caught in the 7100 block of Cermak, riding a girl’s bike taken from a yard the 1900 block of Home. He was turned over to the NRPD; they towed the Charger, too.

An officer pulled over a beige minivan on Pershing; it had no plates. The officer asked for ID. The driver, a Westmont man, age 34, seemed very confused and disoriented. A LEADS name check showed he was a missing person from Westmont with a caution: paranoid schizophrenic, off his medications. Police contacted the man’s social worker, who said the patient had been released from the MacNeal Hospital psychiatric unit a couple of days ago but had not returned for his appointment and so was reported missing. The man was taken to the MacNeal emergency room.

A 21-year-old woman from the 6300 block of 26th Street said she had been out all night and got home at 5 AM to find her male roommate, a 33-year-old man, would not let her inside the apartment. Once she got inside, she found the roommate lying on her bed. She told him to go to his own room. Instead he began to push her around the room, throwing her into a set of shelves and knocking down her TV. She was afraid and called the Cicero man who had just dropped her off and was still outside in his car. He confirmed her story to police. Officers found the roommate in the woman’s bathroom. He had boozy breath and leaned against the wall to keep from sliding to the floor. As officers escorted the handcuffed roommate down three flights of stairs, he got a burst of energy, becoming combative and verbally abusive. Once outside, the roommate broke free, fell down and scraped his face near the eye. He threatened officers, saying "I’m going to kill you m—----f------s! I’m going to kick your asses!" Backup arrived and the man was subdued. He was charged with domestic battery and two counts of resisting a peace officer

Police responded to a 3 AM fight at Inclusive nightclub, 6317 Roosevelt. On arrival, they found several Oak Park police officers who said they had four offenders in custody. A club security guard noticed lines to get in were too long and would-be patrons were trying to push their way inside, so he blocked the doorway. One woman, Rasheda T. Jones, 36, of Chicago, grew disruptive and was told to leave. At this she hit the security guard in the face. Two guards attempted to escort her out. As they approached the exit, two male friends of Rasheda began to punch the guard. The guard pushed the attackers away, and one of the men fell and hurt his forehead on the pavement. He got up and took a swing at a guard. Another offender punched a guard in the chest. When police arrived, all three involved guards said they would sign complaints against the offenders. Arrested were Ms. Jones; Bryant Smith, 37, of Lansing; Dan A. Smith, of Chicago, and Rickey Smith, 41, also of Chicago. All four were charged with battery.

Police and fire personnel responded to call about a car on fire in the 6400 block of 27th St. The 1998 white Dodge had smoke damage and signs of accelerant. A witness said she saw a white Pontiac with two guys, one in a black hoody and one in a beige hoody, walk to the Dodge; she saw the man in the beige hoody light a match and start the fire. She said "Get away from the car – what are you doing?" When the firestarter looked up, she immediately recognized the man as the ex-boyfriend of the Dodge owner. The suspect has an active Cook County warrant and is being sought.

The owner of The Pour House, 6207 Roosevelt, told police two guys in the bar hit her and her boyfriend. The offenders were drunk and had spoken in a rude, profane manner to the bartender, so the boyfriend asked them to leave. The men, 34-year-old Francisco Longoria of Cicero, and 36-year-old Rodolfo Herrera, Jr., of Plano, followed the boyfriend into the men’s room and beat him in the face with their fists. The owner saw and tried to stop them, but Longoria punched her in the nose. Longoria was charged with two counts of battery and Herrera with one battery count.

A check of the address showed police have been to that apartment many times, including once for an incident involving a knife. Police continued to knock until someone opened the door. The residents, a man and a woman, admitted they had been fighting about their bills. They said they had not answered the door because they did not wish to be arrested again. The couple were advised to pipe down, and to open up when police come to the door.

A disturbance call brought police to the 1900 block of Grove, where they found a 44-year-old woman with a bruised, cut face and bleeding lips and gums. The woman said her boyfriend, also 44, punched and choked her. She was taken to MacNeal Hospital. Inside her apartment, officerts confiscated three items for the safety of the occupants: a wood-handled knife, a knife/hammer combination, and a set of handcuffs. Police found and arrested the boyfriend. The man complained his wrist had been hurt during the altercation with the woman. He was taken to MacNeal. While there, the offender telephoned the injured woman and threatened her.

An officer saw three known gang members standing in the 1200 block of Maple after they had been told not to loiter. When they saw his squad car, the men quickly entered a 1996 Grand Am with temporary plates. The officer walked up and asked what they were doing. "We’re leaving," was the reply. A strong odor of cannabis wafted from the Grand Am. The officer told everyone to get out of the car and submit to a weapons check. A rear passenger – a 20-year-old man from the 2700 block of East – told the officer they had weed in the back seat in a sweatshirt pocket. The officer also found a "one-hitter" pipe and a small wooden "dug out" pot container containing what you would expect. The driver, another 20-year-old man, lives in the 1500 block of Wisconsin. The third man is homeless. All three were ticketed for possession of marijuana and the Grand Am was towed.

Dispatchers received a call of a man trying to get into a house through a window. Police came to the 1300 block of Euclid . A witness said he saw a man try to get into a house through a window by the front door. The suspect was described as white, 6-feet tall, thin, mid-twenties, wearing a black hat, black sweatshirt and tan pants. When the witness said, "What are you trying to do?" the man said "Everything is ok," and took off. The witness followed the suspect to 13th and Ridgeland but lost him. The homeowner was contacted; he suspected his wife’s nephew, who has been told to stay away. The husband wants to charge the home-invading nephew with criminal trespass.

An off-duty officer driving westbound on Windsor near Home saw a car pull in front of a 1999 Pontiac, nearly hitting it. The Pontiac then made a sudden u-turn, nearly hitting the police officer's car, and began to chase the first car at speeds of over 40 MPH. During the chase, the Pontiac blew the stop sign at 34th and Home, chasing the other car east on 35th; it then ignored the stop sign at 35th and Clinton (a school zone), driving erratically and nearly hitting the car it was chasing several times. The car being chased pulled into a gas station at Ogden and Oak Park Avenue. The Pontiac pulled in also, pinning the first car so that it could not escape. The Pontiac driver, 43-year-old Bradford Condylis of Chicago, ran to the driver’s side of his quarry and yelled at the other driver, "I work with the Cook County Sheriff’s office – I’m going to take action against you!" The off-duty officer identified himself to both drivers and asked to see Mr. Condylis’s police ID. Condylis said he had claimed a connection with the sheriff just to "teach these young girls a lesson." Finally, Condylis said he was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. He was cited for speeding, blowing two stop signs and driving on an expired license.

A 22-year-old woman living in the 3700 block of Grove walked in to the police station to report a suspicious person. She said she had been seeing a friend at the Ogden Avenue Dunkin Donuts and was getting into her car to leave when two woman pulled up in an Impala. The victim said she knew the driver's and passenger’s first names only. The driver approached the victim’s car, yelled and called her a bitch; the victim denied knowing why she might do this. As the victim backed out to leave, the other driver opened her window and yelled, "I know where you live!" The victim drove away with the yelling woman following her. In fear, she drove to the police station, a maneuver that successfully shook off her pursuers.

The officer drove north on Riverside drive, and at 26th saw that same blue Nissan SUV heading south past the squad car while cranking its loud and excessive bass to unwilling listeners beyond 75 feet away. The officer pulled up behind the noisy Nissan at the Riverside Drive and Harlem stoplight; there, the bass was so tremendous that the squad car’s rearview mirror shook. The driver, a 29-year-old Chicago man, produced a traffic ticket in lieu of his driver’s license. Passengers were told to exit because the car was being impounded. One passenger, a Chicagoan age 31, had an active warrant from South DuPage County. The arresting officer spotted a clear plastic bag of marijuana on the ground near the wanted man, who admitted it was his. South DuPage County agreed to pick him up. The 30-year-old said his stuff was in the house, but his 56-year-old dad and 26-year-old brother would not let him in to get them because they had kicked him out two weeks ago. He said he has tried unsuccessfully several times to get his property; he also said dad had the locks changed to keep him out. The officer spoke with the younger brother, who said dad was at work. The officer called the dad and told him the police were there to get the sons’s things; they received permission to enter. Then the older son said he owned a trailer and wanted it too. At this the younger brother objected, saying the trailer was filled with tools belonging to him and the father, and the older brother could not have it until it was emptied. Police advised the older brother not to return without a police escort, and not to enter the residence at all since he had already retrieved his stuff.

Officers were sent to 3531 S. Elmwood to meet a man who wanted entry to the house. There they found Georgia resident Joseph Sisto, 46, who told them an unusual story. He said on Sunday the 25th, his estranged brother Michael Sisto, 43, had called to inform him of their father John’s death. Joseph was concerned and asked Berwyn police to do a well-being check to confirm this. Police contacted Michael, who said that the father – owner of 3531 S. Elmwood – had been ill and stayed with Michael at his Hoffman Estates home, where the father grew worse and finally died. The brothers had been estranged for some time. Joseph had tried to call Michael back several times since Sunday with no result, so he flew to Illinois and called an attorney. He sought and received a court order to enter the Elmwood house so that he could secure and inventory property there.
A woman neighbor Joseph had known a long time accompanied him to the attic of the house to assist with the inventory. The responding officer noticed the house was filled with antiques and artifacts that appeared to be valuable. When Joseph returned from the attic, he told the officer he needed police protection, and that several items in the attic did not belong to his father, his brother or to him.
Joseph told police his father, John Sisto, was an Italian immigrant who had access to ancient Italian artifacts and was able to smuggle them into the US by cargo ship. He related that in the early 1970s, John Sisto was arrested by the Italian government and detained for three months for illegally obtaining and exporting such items.
Joseph produced documents from the attic explaining the significance of some of the objects, which he believes are stolen and priceless. The officer observed the entire attic was full of documents, paintings and artifacts Joseph stated were worth millions. He led the officer to the basement, which was filled with the same sorts of things. Joseph then stated he needed an alarm company to wire the premises to the police station, and he contacted Brinks security. The scene was secured and officers posted at the front and rear of the house until the situation is resolved.

The driver, 22-year-old Angel Garcia of Cicero, stated he has a suspended driver's license and no insurance. An officer spotted a man in the 2300 block of the East/Scoville alley staggering along looking through trash cans. At the same time, the officer saw a gold 1999 Chrysler minivan leave the scene at the approach of the police car, so a description of the van was broadcast to other squad cars. Approaching the man on foot, the officer found a 29-year-old man from the 2800 block of Lombard, looking for scrap. By his foul odor and limited attention span, the officer determined the trashpicker was intoxicated. He was arrested for disorderly conduct (public intoxication).
Meanwhile, the gold minivan went southbound through the alley, never stopping as it crossed 24th street. It stopped for police, though. The driver, another man from the 2800 block of Lombard, had a suspended license. He was arrested for that, for having no insurance, and for sailing right out of the alley and across the street without stopping.

Police were dispatched to check on complaints of a disturbance in a second-floor apartment in the 3100 block of Oak Park Avenue. Officers arrived and could hear yelling, laughing and loud music from the street. Once at the second floor apartment, they found a small but extremely noisy party consisting of the 29-year-old male renter; a 20-year-old Cicero man; an 18-year-old Berwyn man, and a Berwyn woman, age 20. The renter told police he was just having a little party with his friends; he stated he did not feel the music was bothering anyone else in the building. Police responded that it was too loud and would have to be turned down for the rest of the night.

Excessively loud music emanated from within, heard beyond 75 feet away from the car. After being stopped, the driver, a 21-year-old man from Berwyn, could show no license and no proof of insurance. The Nissan was towed and the man was arrested and cited for driving without a valid license, for having no insurance and of course for blasting his stereo in violation of Berwyn's local noise ordinance.

Police noticed a gold 1992 Buick sedan backing into a corner of the Marathon gas station parking lot at 16th and Oak Park Avenue. A plate check showed the owner, a 51-year-old Brookfield man, was wanted by Cook County for unlawful possession of a controlled substance and had a suspended driver’s license as well. Police ordered the driver to exit and put his hands on the vehicle. Instead, he stepped on the gas and fled with police in pursuit. He led them on a chase through northwest Berwyn, going at least 45 MPH in a 25 MPH zone. Turning north on Wisconsin in the 1600 block, he struck the corner of a garage but continued eastbound. The chase ended when a police sergeant blocked the Buick’s path using squad car #118. At this, the driver left the Buick and tried to run. He flailed and kicked as four officers worked at handcuffing him. A Taser stun burst had no effect, so the Taser prongs were used on his upper back. This worked and he was cuffed at last. He was charged with two counts aggravated fleeing and eluding, resisting a peace officer, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. Once at the station, he threw himself on the floor, refused to enter his cell and grew combative again, earning himself another zap from the Taser to gain his compliance.

As she sat waiting for traffic to move again, three boys ran into the street, threw rocks through her open car window, then ran westbound. The woman’s lip was cut and bleeding and her face was scratched. She told police she could identify the offenders, and described them: all appeared to be Hispanic males, 13-14 years old, two wearing white t-shirts and baggy pants, and one in a blue t-shirt who had such large, curly black hair it "almost looked like a wig".

A mom and her 9-year-old daughter came to the police station to report the little girl was stabbed in the right arm with a pencil on March 20th at Havlicek Elementary School. The little girl said she was standing outside but on school property after school on Tuesday March 20th when a male classmate walked up and stabbed her. The girl thinks he did it because earlier that day in art class, her pencil fell on him. The school has already dealt with this, and the girl has been treated for her injury, but the mother wanted to make a police report also.

Callers to 911 reported two dogs at large in the 3700 block of Ridgeland. Police arrived to see a medium tan mix and a Rottweiler mix running around, chasing the mailman and some preschool kids. The officers chased the dogs back to their home in the 3600 block of Elmwood. The 56-year-old owner had been warned about this in December. She said she had been cleaning and the dogs just "got loose." Because of the multiple past calls about her dogs, she was ticketed.

A reckless driver in a white GMC pickup heading northbound on Harlem at 23rd ,struck a turn lane sign in the median and continued northbound into oncoming lanes of traffic, abruptly returned to the median only to strike the stoplight at 23rd and Harlem, then head off west on Cermak. A driver who witnessed this followed the truck while calling 911. Police stopped the truck at Cermak and DesPlaines. The vehicle still had the traffic control post on its roof; the traffic lights had fallen into the bed of the truck.
The driver, a 45-year-old Stickney man, had only a Mexican ID and required a translator ; his license had been revoked for DUI. He refused chemical sobriety tests, but officers noted he smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, could barely stand up, and appeared sleepy and unsure of where he was. There was a half-empty 12-pack of Heineken on the front passenger seat. He was charged with driving on a revoked license, illegal transportation of alcohol, no valid insurance, improper lane usage, damage to property and damage to state property.
